Thieving
Thieving is a skill which allows players to obtain coins and items by stealing from market stalls or by pickpocketing NPC's. It is a great skill for starting off an account, as you will earn a lot of money very quickly.

Pickpocketing
Pickpocketing is the act of stealing from anothers pocket. This results in little gold, but very high experience. The downside to Pickpocketing, is that you have a chance to get caught, which will cause the player to take damage and be stunned for a while. This puts Pickpocketing and stealing from Stalls at roughly the same experience per hour. Most NPCs can be found walking around in the Ardougne area, the others all around Runescape.

Chief Thief Robin Training (Fastest Experience)
The fastest way to get to 99 thieving would be by stealing from the stall used in Chief Thief Robins Training. This will also gain you a lot of money at the same time.
At the Market Place at Edgeville you may notice an NPC named "Chief Thief Robin" if you talk to him he tells you he's looking for a talented thief. Then you have to pick-pocket him until you get a key. What this does is unlocks another stall for players to steal from. This stall is different to all other stalls, because it can be upgraded giving more experience as you go.
To upgrade the stalls all you need to do is thieve from it until you find a statuette, once you have one hand it over to Chief Thief Robin, and he will upgrade the stall for you.
Once you've upgraded the stall all the way to the Crossbow Stall, you will complete a task which gives you "Double Eyepatch" which improves cash rewards from thieving by 10%.
Below is a table which shows you information about the stalls.
