Mutant Tarn
The Mutant Tarn is a powerful and deadly boss that drops Chaotics and Zogre Bones. It can use a wide variety of damaging attacks, and it has a large store of hitpoints and excellent defense. For players using Protection from Magic, it's not as dangerous as many other bosses; however, it can still kill unwary players. The Mutant Tarn has the following attacks:
- A single-target melee attack that does up to 37 damage
- A multi-target magic attack that does up to 72 damage
- An area-of-effect burn attack that covers the floor with pockets of fire. Anyone standing in a square where fire spawns will take damage
- A poison attack that starts at 8 damage
Players who are soloing Tarn will most likely need a significant amount of food in order to get the kill. However, due to his exceptionally valuable drops, Tarn is extremely crowded and there will almost always be 2-5 players in the boss room. As long as there are multiple players in the room, the damage from these attacks is negligible. For most kills, you will not need to eat at all. In any case, conserving supplies at Tarn is not an issue, as it is possible to bank after every kill.
Because of the competition at Tarn, the only worthwhile attack style is melee, and having maxed or near-maxed melee gear is highly recommended. Only that setup will do sufficient damage to give you a good chance of getting the kill.

Gear and inventory setup
As noted above, the Mutant Tarn is always extremely crowded, often with multiple players in maxed gear. To have a reasonable chance of getting kills, then, you must also be in maxed or near-maxed gear. Currently, melee has far better damage-per-second (DPS) than any other combat style, so the best setup is melee. Defense is essentially irrelevant here, so you should use the gear that provides the best offensive bonuses possible. In addition, you will need to bring a Steel Titan with Steel of Legends scrolls. Having that familiar will significantly increase your damage output and give you a better chance of getting the kill.
Many players cast Vengeance while at Tarn to further increase the damage they do. However, this is optional because damage reflected via Vengeance does not count towards determining which player gets the kill. The only advantage of Vengeance, then, is slightly faster kills.
Here is the best gear to use in each gear slot:

Inventory Setup
Inventory setup isn't particularly important at Tarn, because it is easily possible to bank after every kill. Any inventory setup that includes the following 5 items will be sufficient:
- Overloads
- Super Restores
- Rocktails or similar food
- Steel of Legends Scrolls
- Special Attack weapon
Here is a sample inventory setup:
Getting There
Step 1: Teleport to "Tarn & Ice Queen" under the "Bosses" teleport option
Step 2: Kill Hobgoblins or Hellhounds until you reach the required kill count to enter.
- Non-Donor: 20 Kill count required
- Normal Donor: 15 Kill count required
- Super Donor: 5 Kill count required
- Extreme Donor: 3 Kill count required
Step 3: Enter the western (Red) portal to access Tarn.
You should turn on your protection prayers before entering this portal, in case Tarn has already spawned.
Step 4: If Tarn has not spawned, stand in the indicated spot to attack him the instant that he does spawn.
Banking between kills
Step 1: When Tarn dies, pick up the drop (if you got it) and teleport to Edgeville (Home). You will keep your kill count
Step 2: Restock your inventory in the bank
Step 3: Run slightly north of the bank and use the altar to recharge your prayer, and right click on the nurse to replenish your health, summoning points and special attack.
Step 3: Teleport back to Tarn, re-enter the portal, and get ready to kill him again
Optimal Kill Strategy
In order to maximize your damage output and have a good chance of getting the drop, there are a lot of different things you need to be doing while killing the Mutant Tarn. All of the tasks are listed here, and they are demonstrated in the video below.
- Attack Tarn as soon as he spawns. It is better to do this manually rather than waiting for auto-retaliate to work
- Use your Steel Titan spec the instant you start attacking, and then as often as possible throughout the kill
- If you have special attack energy, switch to your spec weapon and use it right after a Steel Titan spec, so you don't miss any specs
- As you run out of summoning points, drink Super Restore potions to regain summoning energy and continue spec'ing
- If you need to eat, eat a Rocktail at the same time as drinking a dose of Super Restore, to minimize the time lost
Tips and tricks
Getting your titan out of the way
Steel Titans can spec equally well from anywhere, so you might as well keep them from walking around on the boss and making it difficult to right-click. If you run next to the northeast wall and call your familiar, it will get stuck in the wall and stay there for the remainder of the kill.
Dealing with competition
There is often a lot of competition at Tarn, but sometimes you can use that to your advantage. Players with significantly inferior gear to you will almost never get the kill, so they actually help you get more kills per hour. Therefore, you might as well be friendly and helpful towards them - they might stick around a bit longer.
Drops
The most important drop from the Mutant Tarn are the Zogre Bones that it drops every kill as these offer 120k prayer experience when offered on an altar, because of this they are very valuable to players. Luckily, the bones are not the only great reward from the Mutant Tarn, as there are plenty of unique drops that will boost the amount of money you make killing this boss even more. These includes the warrior ring (i) and chaotic weaponry. There is also a very rare chance of receiving a Mutant Tarn pet if you kill this boss.
